A Stress Echo (Stress Echocardiogram) is a test that helps evaluate how well the heart functions under physical stress, typically through exercise or medication that simulates exercise effects. It combines a standard echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) with a stress test, which allows doctors to see how the heart muscles and valves are working when under increased demand.
Here’s how it generally works:
- Resting Echo: A baseline echocardiogram is performed to get images of the heart at rest.
- Stress Induction: Either through treadmill exercise or medication, the heart rate is increased to a target level.
- Post-Stress Echo: After reaching the target heart rate, another echocardiogram is taken to assess how the heart responds to stress.
Purpose:
The Stress Echo is commonly used to:
- Diagnose coronary artery disease (CAD)
- Evaluate the severity of existing heart conditions
- Monitor progress in individuals with known heart issues
Why It’s Important:
By observing how the heart performs under stress, doctors can identify areas with reduced blood flow or potential blockages in the coronary arteries. This helps guide treatment decisions and preventive strategies.
