TISSUE TRANSGLUTAMINASE-IGA (TTG)

Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) is an enzyme involved in various processes, including tissue repair and protection. In celiac disease, the immune system mistakenly targets this enzyme, leading to the production of anti-tTG antibodies. These antibodies are highly sensitive and specific for diagnosing celiac disease, making the tTG-IgA test a preferred screening tool.

In people with celiac disease, exposure to gluten triggers the immune system to produce these antibodies, which leads to inflammation and damage in the small intestine. The tTG-IgA test is effective for both diagnosing the disease and monitoring patients' adherence to a gluten-free diet. When someone with confirmed celiac disease follows the diet strictly, levels of tTG antibodies should decrease, indicating healing and better management of the condition.
