SERUM HOMOCYSTEINE

The homocysteine test measures the level of homocysteine in the blood. It is often used as a marker for assessing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, identifying vitamin deficiencies (particularly folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12), and diagnosing certain genetic conditions like homocystinuria.

 Purpose of the Test:

• Cardiovascular Risk Assessment: Elevated homocysteine levels (hyperhomocysteinemia) are associated with an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and blood clots. The test can help assess this risk, especially in individuals with other risk factors or a family history of cardiovascular disease.
• Vitamin Deficiency Detection: Deficiencies in folic acid (vitamin B9), vitamin B12, and vitamin B6 can lead to elevated homocysteine levels. The test is sometimes used to check for these deficiencies, especially in people with anemia or those showing neurological symptoms.
• Diagnosis of Homocystinuria: This is a rare inherited disorder that results in extremely high levels of homocysteine in the blood. The test can help in diagnosing this condition, which can lead to developmental issues and increased risk of blood clots.
• Monitoring Therapy: The test can be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatments aimed at lowering homocysteine levels, such as vitamin supplementation or dietary changes.
