PTH Intact (PARATHYROID HORMONE)

The intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) test measures the level of parathyroid hormone in your blood. PTH is produced by the parathyroid glands, which are four small glands located near or on the thyroid gland. The hormone plays a vital role in regulating the levels of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D in the blood and bones.

Functions of Parathyroid Hormone (PTH):

• Calcium Regulation: PTH helps control calcium levels by increasing calcium absorption in the intestines, promoting calcium release from bones, and reducing calcium loss in the urine.
• Phosphorus Balance: It also regulates phosphorus levels in the blood by reducing its reabsorption in the kidneys.
• Vitamin D Activation: PTH promotes the activation of vitamin D in the kidneys, which further helps in calcium absorption from the intestines.
